Making the Most of Your Small Kitchen: Insights from Dovetail Custom Kitchens

In today’s fast-paced world, where urban living often means smaller spaces, the kitchen remains the heart of the home. Maximizing every inch becomes a design challenge, and this is where custom kitchen solutions shine.

In this blog post, the Dovetail Custom Kitchens team explores creative strategies and innovative ideas to transform compact kitchens into functional, stylish, and efficient spaces.

1. Prioritize

Understanding the priorities of a client’s kitchen is always important, but balancing those priorities is especially critical when designing within a small space. Appliance preferences, sufficient storage, ample counter space, and good flow each play an important part in a successful kitchen design! Each component must be carefully considered when determining what to prioritize and what to sacrifice. Remember to evaluate scale and proportion within the context of the room. Maximizing storage is important, but don’t sacrifice too much on counter space. Be sure to carefully weigh whether seating in the kitchen is necessary or if the extra storage would better serve the space. And always ensure proper clearances for walking space.

2. Smart Appliance Selections

Choosing appliances for a small kitchen can be a challenge. It is critical to understand your family’s needs and balance that with what physically fits within the space. There are many innovative, space-saving appliances that minimize the footprint within the kitchen and allow for more cabinetry or countertop space. In compact kitchens, under-counter refrigeration is a good solution for maximizing counter space. Speed ovens combine the function of the microwave and a convection oven into one appliance. Microwave hoods combine range-hood ventilation with the microwave. Selecting a Range instead of a Cooktop and Wall oven consolidates cooking functions into one space, which is usually more budget-friendly. Counter-depth and Built-in refrigerators are designed to be installed within shallower cabinetry, thereby minimizing their projection into the space. A workstation sink incorporates preparation functions within the basin and can double as additional counter space when needed.

3. Keep it Simple

Aesthetically, a small kitchen benefits from simplicity. Consider choosing a slab door style, slim shaker, or classic shaker in a white or neutral paint. Light colors, simple door styles, and calming countertops will help your small kitchen feel bright and airy. Quartz may be a good selection for a pure and consistent pattern. Keep the backsplash tile light and simple; consider larger format tiles to minimize grout lines and create the illusion of a more expansive space. Consider clear glass for decorative lighting to preserve sight lines. Make sure the decorative hardware isn’t too busy; clean lines maintain a minimalist vibe and make a small kitchen feel more spacious.

4. Don’t Skimp on Storage

Incorporating innovative storage solutions is key to a successful small kitchen design. Be sure to use the room’s height and bring the cabinets as close to the ceiling as possible. Invest in cabinetry enhancements, like pantry pullouts, drawer organizers, blind-corner pullouts, tray dividers, cutlery dividers, and other creative storage solutions. Work with your designer to create a dedicated storage space for each kitchen item; this will encourage organization and efficiency within your small space.

5. Customize

Take advantage of Dovetail’s custom and semi-custom cabinetry by modifying cabinets to fit your space. We can customize cabinetry to the 1/16” and incorporate new storage ideas specifically for your needs.
